Overview
A Muslim marriage, or Nikah, is treated as a civil contract between the bride and groom under Islamic law. The marriage is solemnized in the presence of a Qazi (cleric) and two witnesses, followed by documentation and registration under local authorities. It ensures that the marriage is legally recognized in the eyes of both religion and the State.
Eligibility Criteria
- Both the bride and groom must be Muslims.
- The bride must be at least 18 years old, and the groom must be 21 or older.
- Consent from both parties is mandatory.
- The bride must have a Wali (guardian) present during Nikah.
- Two male Muslim witnesses must be present during the marriage ceremony.
Documents Required
- Aadhar Card or Passport of both partners
- Birth or school certificate (for age proof)
- Nikahnama (marriage contract signed by both parties)
- Address proof (electricity bill, rent agreement, etc.)
- Two witnesses’ ID proofs and passport-size photos
- Divorce decree or death certificate (if previously married)
Marriage Registration Process
- The Nikah is solemnized by a Qazi in the presence of witnesses.
- A written Nikahnama is prepared and signed by both partners and witnesses.
- The Nikahnama and supporting documents are submitted to the marriage registrar.
- After verification, the marriage certificate is issued by the registrar.
