Overview
A Special Marriage allows couples from different religions or castes to marry legally without conversion. Conducted under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, it’s a civil and secular marriage recognized nationwide with full legal protection.
Eligibility Criteria
- Bride must be 18+, Groom 21+.
- Both must be unmarried and mentally sound.
- One partner must have lived in the district for 30 days.
- Not within prohibited degrees of relationship.
Documents Required
- Aadhar Card / Passport / Voter ID
- Birth certificate / Age proof
- Passport-size photos (6 each)
- Address proof
- Joint affidavit (marital status, religion, and nationality)
- Divorce / Death certificate (if applicable)
- 3 witnesses’ ID and photos
Marriage Registration Process
- Notice of Intended Marriage filed with Marriage Officer.
- 30-Day Public Notice displayed at Registrar’s office.
- Verification of Documents & Objections (if any).
- Marriage Declaration & Signature in presence of witnesses.
- Marriage Certificate Issued under Special Marriage Act.
Timeline
30–40 working days, depending on district schedule.
